Abstract This invention as disclosed provides a process for the in situ preparation of a vinylimidazoline polymer composition dispersed in an inert oil comprising: (a) reacting acrylonitrile polymer with ethylene diamine in mol rations of at least about 1:1 in a volatile solvent medium containing an organic or inorganic sulfide catalyst capable of generating at least trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide while retaining the reaction medium at a temperature between 40°C and 100°C. and under a dry inert atmosphere to produce poly(vinylimidazoline) and continuously purging off the by-product gaseous ammonia; and (b) distilling off excess unreacted ethylene diamine and volatile solvent under reduced pressure while concurrently, adding an inert oil in an amount sufficient to yield a dispersion in which the concentration of poly(vinylimidazoline) in oil is not greater than 65%. This dispersion may, if desired, be reacted with sulfuric acid to form a poly(2-vinylimidazolinium)bisulfate which is useful as a flocculant. Stable anhydrous dispersions of poly(2-vinyl- imidazolinium)bisulfate in an inert oil are thus formed; these dispersions may be safely and conveniently handled. No batch centrifugation and drying steps are necessary in the manufacturing process.
