FLOODING POLYVALENT ION-CONTAINING OIL RESERVOIRS WITH MICELLAR DISPERSIONS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A micellar dispersion having an internal and external phase and having, as a portion of the surfactant, a petroleum sulfonate containing a polyvalent metal cation is injected into a reservoir to displace oil in a secondary-type oil recovery process. The micellar dispersion may be either oil or water-external or intermediate in character. Surfactant useful in the micellar dispersion must be preferentially soluble in one of the phases of the system and less soluble in the other. The HLB range of the sulfonates used is between 3 and 18, and more preferably is between about 8 to about 15. The micellar dispersions having the greatest stability contain a combination of water and oil soluble surfactants and, preferably, a plurality of molecular weights of one or both of water and oil soluble surfactants. Cosurfactants, ionic materials, and other additives may also be utilized. The micellar dispersion used can be formed in two ways, i.e., prior to injection into the reservoir or in situ. The micellar dispersions utilized in the secondary-type oil recovery process are particularly well suited for use in reservoirs which contain at least about 1000 ppm polyvalent cations and, more preferably, at least about 2500 ppm polyvalent cations.
