ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Flow control and fire detection and location apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus is used with a system which circulates heated or cooled water for use in connection with the heating and air conditioning system of a building. The apparatus comprises a short length of tubing or pipe connected to provide a bypass for flow of heated or cooled water around a segment of the return line from heating or cooling apparatus to a standpipe through which the water is returned to an equipment room. In the bypass there is a check valve which is effective to prevent flow of water through the bypass toward the heating or cooling apparatus. but ineffective to prevent such flow away from the heating or cooling apparatus and toward the equipment room. in the bypassed segment of the return line there is a check valve which is effective to prevent water flow from the heating or cooling apparatus toward the standpipe. but ineffective to prevent such flow in the opposite direction and. in addition, a flow sensor which is responsive to flow in the by- passed segment of the return line and operable. in response to such flow, to transmit a signal. In normal operation, water from the heating or cooling apparatus flows through the bypass line to the standpipe and back to the equipment room for heating or cooling and recirculation. The apparatus also includes sprinkler heads for fire protection connected to the return line on the heating or cooling apparatus side of the bypass line; when one of the sprinkler heads is fused by a fire so that water from the return line flows therethrough there is a substantial loss of water from the system which is detected either by an excessive flow of makeup water to the system or by an excessive pressure drop therein. Either the excessive pressure drop or the excessive flow of makeup water triggers an alarm, de-energizes the heating or air conditioning system and energizes a fire pump which supplies water to the standpipe to serve the fused sprinkler head or heads. Water from the fire pump increases the pressure in the standpipe and causes a reversal in the direction of flow through the return line which serves the fused sprinkler head or heads. The check valve therein prevents the reversed flow through the bypass line, forcing the flow through the bypassed segment of the return line and the check valve and flow sensor therein to the activated sprinkler head. This flow through the bypassed segment of the return line activates the flow sensor. causing it to transmit a signal which indicates the location of the fire.
