Disclosed is a method and apparatus for the encapsulation of biologically- active substances in red blood cells, characterized by an optionally automated, continuous-flow, self-contained electroporation system which allows withdrawal of blood from a patient, separation of red blood cells, and optional recombination of blood plasma and the modified red blood cells thereby producing blood with modified biological characteristics. The present invention in this divisional application is particularly directed to apparatus for washing biological particles, comprising a biological particle plate having an outside surface, and an inside surface with ridges thereon defining a biological particle labyrinth with an entrance and an exit for the passage of biological particles therethrough. There is also a wash solution plate comprising an outside surface, and an inside surface having ridges thereon defining a wash solution labyrinth, corresponding to the biological particle labyrinth, with an entrance and an exit for the passage of wash solution therethrough. A semi-permeable membrane is disposed between the biological particle labyrinth and the wash solution labyrinth, wherein the semi-permeable membrane prevents the passage of particles as large as or larger than the biological particles therethrough.
