ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A flue heat exchanger particularly adapted for use in a water heater tank comprising a plurality of segments of a metallic or non-metallic non-friable refractory material randomly packed within a flue. Rounded metallic sections of steel pipe or copper tubing having a length not less than one-half and not more than twice the diameter of said pipe or tubing are preferred.
