ABSTRACT The invention relates to the ultrasonic examination of a body member, wherein the body member is immersed in a liquid which defines the propagation medium between the body member, and a transmitting transducer. More particularly, the invention relates to a method of compensating for velocity variations between various body members. The method comprises the steps of: placing the body member in contact with a transmitter and a receiving transducer, measuring the time interval between the launching of a pulse and its detection, placing the transducers in a spaced relationship in a reference liquid of characterized reference velocity, measuring the time interval between launching of a pulse and its detection, adding a quantity of a second liquid to a quantity of the reference liquid in accordance with the difference in the two time intervals and immersing the body member in the aforementioned mixture.
