ABSTRACT A centrifugal pump wherein the housing defines an annular chamber which is disposed downstream of the impeller and surrounds the shaft seal. The chamber receives a hollow cylindrical or frustoconical shroud which spacedly surrounds the shaft seal and protects it from solid particles in the conveyed fluid. A non-contact type annular seal between the impeller and the housing surrounds the shroud.
