A viscous fluid type heater includes a heating chamber for holding viscous fluid and a rotor located in the heating chamber. A holding chamber is located below the heating chamber to communicate with the heating chamber. A plunger, which is actuated by a solenoid, is movable between a forward position for maximizing the volume of the holding chamber and a rearward position for minimizing the volume of the holding chamber. When the plunger is at the forward position, viscous fluid is discharged from the heating chamber to the holding chamber. When the plunger is at the rearward position, viscous fluid is supplied from the holding chamber to the heating chamber. This allows the load of the heater to be removed or reinstated selectively. In an engine-driven vehicle, the engine can thus started without being hindered by the heater.

Dispositif de chauffage du type à fluide visqueux comprenant une chambre de chauffage pour contenir le fluide visqueux et un rotor situé dans cette chambre de chauffage. Une chambre de retenue est située sous la chambre de chauffage afin de communiquer avec cette dernière. Un plongeur, actionné par un solénoïde, est mobile entre une position avant afin de maximiser le volume de la chambre de retenue et une position arrière pour minimiser le volume de celle-ci. Lorsque le plongeur se trouve à la position avant, le fluide visqueux est expulsé de la chambre de chauffage vers la chambre de retenue. Lorsque le plongeur est en position arrière, le fluide visqueux est acheminé de la chambre de retenue jusqu'à la chambre de chauffage. Il est ainsi possible d'enlever ou de rétablir, de manière sélective, la charge associée au dispositif de chauffage. Dans le cas d'un véhicule à moteur, il est alors possible de démarrer le moteur sans que le dispositif de chauffage ne lui nuise.
