An inlet device is taught for use in conveying a fluid. The inlet device includes a tube having a sidewall, an inlet and a perforation through the tubes sidewall. A ball formed from an energy absorbing material is retained in the tube's inner bore. The inlet device acts to reduce the abrasive effects of the fluid by reducing its velocity and by reducing its kinetic energy.
