Abstract of the Disclosure A high voltage circuit breaker includes plural vacuum interrupters immersed in an insulting fluid and operated in pairs or singly by a compact operating mechanism which includes lever arms and spring loaded coupling devices which load the vacuum interrupter contacts in the closed position and apply an impact force to open the interrupter contacts before an electrically conductive cross-bar which connects the vacuum interrupters in series in a closed position separates from the interrupters to insert isolation gaps in the circuit breaker which fill with the insulating oil. The arrangement is particularly suitable for uprating existing oil circuit breakers.
