ABSTRACT A fluid operable hammer has a hammer piston reciprocably slidable in an elongated bore of a body member so as to provide work and return strokes. Reciprocation is achieved by hydraulic fluid under pressure, which fluid exhausts into an exhaust fluid receiver. The exhaust fluid receiver includes a variable volume exhaust chamber which is maintained in intermittent fluid communication with the bore, the chamber having minimum and maximum volumes. The differential volume between the minimum and maximum volumes is substantially no less than the displacement of the piston within the bore.
