(Case No. 8222) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A compact pneumatic brake unit having an output shaft arranged to operate transversely of a pneumatic service brake piston, with force amplification provided by a bellcrank member. The pneumatic piston push rod is interconnected with a spring-actuated, air-released emergency/parking brake piston through a lost-motion connection, which provides for movement of the service brake piston independently of the emergency/ parking brake piston when the service brake piston is actuated, but which actuates the service brake piston jointly with the emergency/parking brake piston when the latter is actuated. A slack adjuster mechanism is arranged on the output shaft to maintain the proper axial relationship between the service piston push rod and emergency/parking brake piston, whereby the emergency/parking brake spring force is maintained constant with brake shoe wear.
