A method of removing, reducing or detoxifying organic pollutants from a fluid, water or air, by contacting the fluid with a photo-reactive metal semiconductor material in the presence of ultraviolet light of a wavelength to activate the photoreactive material, is improved by simultaneously contacting the photoreactive material with a substance that accepts electrons and thus inhibits hole-electron recombination. Such substance will be such as to readily accept electrons either from the conduction band or from superoxide ions, and to rapidly dissociate into harmless products.
Procédé permettant d'enlever, de diminuer ou de détoxifier les polluants organiques se trouvant dans un fluide, de l'eau ou de l'air, en mettant ledit fluide en contact avec un matériau à semi-conducteur métallique photosensible en présence d'une lumière ultraviolette ayant une certaine longueur d'onde pour activer ledit matériau photosensible. On améliore ledit procédé en mettant simultanément en contact le matériau photosensible avec une substance attirant les électrons de manière à inhiber la recombinaison trous-électrons. Ladite substance est d'une nature telle qu'elle attire aisément les électrons provenant soit de la bande de conduction soit des ions peroxyde et se dissocie rapidement en produits inoffensifs.
