A fluid sample collection system 10 includes a vial 12, a plunger 66 and a fluid sample collection device 54 having an absorbent 64 for absorbing and retaining a fluid sample therein. The plunger 66 includes an elongated handle portion 68 and a plunger head portion 70 detachably connected to the handle portion 68. The plunger 66 also includes a splash guard 96 supported on the handle portion 68. During the sample collection process, the saturated absorbent 64 from the sample collection device 54 is placed into the vial 12 and the plunger 66 is then advanced toward a closed end of the vial 12 to express the fluid sample from the absorbent 64. The plunger head portion 70 is retained within the vial 12 with the absorbent 64 in a generally compressed state and the handle portion 68 is detached and removed from the vial 12.
