A fluid treatment apparatus comprises two titanium mesh filters (12, 22) connected in series across a flow passage. Each filter (12, 22) is irradiated by UV light from respective lamps (13a, 13b, 23a, 23b), so as to kill any microorganisms trapped on the filters. Backwashing means (18, 19, 28, 19) are provided for backwashing each filter in succession whilst fluid flowing along the passage is filtered by the other filter. In this manner microorganisms are unable to pass through the apparatus untreated.

Chaque filtre (12, 22) est irradié avec de la lumière ultraviolette provenant de lampes respectives (13a, 13b, 23a, 23b) de manière à détruire les micro-organismes piégés sur les filtres. Des dispositifs de lavage à contre-courant (18, 19, 28, 19) sont prévus pour laver à contre-courant chaque filtre l'un après l'autre alors que le fluide s'écoulant dans le passage est filtré par l'autre filtre. De cette manière les micro-organismes ne peuvent absolument pas traverser l'appareil sans être traités.
