ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fluidifier and stabilizer additive, particularly suitable for coal suspensions in water, based on sulphonated tar, is produced by oxidation of sulphonated and salified tar, the oxidation being evidenced by the development of SO2 during the sulphonation reaction. The method for the preparation of the additive, consists of contacting tar with liquid or gaseous SO3, tar and/or SO3 preferably dissolved in an halogenated organic solvent, and the solvent is recovered and the oxidized sulphonated additive is salified.
