ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fluidized bed furnace (10) comprising a housing, a perforate grate means (9) supported in said housing adapted to support a bed of particulate material including some combustibles, said grate means (9) being divided into a plurality of segments (E2 through E6, SH-1 through SH-5, RH-1 through RH-5), means for supplying air (30) beneath the grate means (9) independently to each segment, first segments (E-2 through E-6) having evaporating surface imbedded in the particulate material thereabove, second segments (SH-1 through SH-5) having superheater surface imbedded in the particulate material thereabove, third segments (RH-1 through RH-5) having reheater surface imbedded in the particulate material thereabove, fourth segments (E-1, E-7) having no surface imbedded in the particulate material thereabove, and ignitor combustion means (32, 34) for directing hot combustion gases into the particulate material above the fourth segments (E-1, E- 7), in order to start up the fluidized bed furnace (10).
