FLUIDIZED BED COATING APPARATUS AND PROCESS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A glassware coating process and apparatus has been disclosed wherein a fluidized bed dipping mechanism is provided which is adapted to simultaneously transfer a plurality of heated objects to and through the media retained in the bed. A clamping mechanism is provided for gripping heated ware about the finish and immersing the ware into a fluidized bed of thermoplastic polymer resin. The clamping mechanism includes a conduit means which extends through the mechanism, which is adapted to deliver a fluid in quantities sufficient to maintain the clamping mechanism below the melting temperature of the resin and to generate a positive pressure gradient within the cavity formed by grasping to exclude the polymer from this immediate area. The clamping mechanism is thus maintained at a temperature such that thermal shock is precluded with respect to the ware being treated as well as powder pickup by the mechanism being prevented.
