Docket No. 1940-WF ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fluidized bed combustor comprises a housing having a chamber therein with a top having a discharge for the gases which are generated in the chamber and a bottom with a discharge for heated fluid. An assembly is arranged in the lower portion of the chamber and the assembly includes a lower plate which is mounted on a support flange of the housing so that it is spaced from the bottom of the chamber and defines a fluid plenum be- tween it and the bottom of the chamber for the discharge of heated fluid. The assembly includes a heat exchanger inlet plenum having tubes therethrough for the passage of fluidizer air and a windbox above the heat exchanger plenum which has a distributor plate top wall. A portion of the chamber above the top wall defines a fluidized bed. Fluidizer air is directed through a side wall of the housing into the space surrounding the heat exchanger and is then directed through a lower section below the heat exchanger plenum and upwardly through tubes ex- tending through the plenum to the windbox. The distributor plate contains a plurality of tuyeres which permit the flow of the fluidizer air from the windbox upwardly into the fluidized bed. Coal is also directed into the fluidized bed for ignition with the fluidizer air to generate combustion gases which are discharged from the top of the chamber. Heat exchanger cooling tubes are disposed in the fluidized bed and mounted in the assembly in a manner such that an inlet extends into the heat exchanger plenum so that incoming cooling fluid is directed into the heat exchanger plenum and is then directed to the inlet in the heat exchanger tubes up into the heat exchanger bed and is returned, for example, through an inner tube of the heat exchanger tubes and is discharge into the lower plenum at the bottom of the chamber and ?her out of the housing. The whole assembly in- cluding the heat exchanger tubes may be removed or inserted into the housing without difficulty.
