ABSTRACT Improved fluidized-bed process and apparatus. The present invention relates to an apparatus for the purification of waste water which comprises a reactor having a height H and an average cross-sectional dimension D, whereby the ratio H/D is 2-40, preferably 2-10. There is a liquid introduction device at the bottom of the reactor and a three-phase separator situated on top of the reactor. Situated substantially between this three-phase separator and the reactor, are one or more gas collection compartments positioned to lead away 30-80%, preferably 50-80%, of the gas leaving the reactor, before entering the three phase separator, this gas being led directly to the gas collection compartment of the three phase separator. Moreover a fluidized-bed process is provided in which granular sludge or sludge attached to a carrier is used for the anaerobic purification whereby 30-80% biogas leaving the reactor is led away, before the remainder of the gas, the liquid, and the solids leaving the reactor are substantially separated from each other.
