ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is described herein for regeneration of spent, coke con- taminated fluidised cracking catalyst by burning coke therefrom with a molEcu- lar oxygen containing regeneration gas in a fluidized dense phase bed, and for burning substantially all carbon monoxide formed to carbon dioxide. The process includes charges spent catalyst vertically downwards into a lower regeneration zone and an oxygen containing primary regeneration gas is passed under turbulent flow upwards through the lower regeneration zone and into the bottom of an upper regeneration zone, The oxygen-containing primary regenera- tion gas contains about 25 to 40 percent of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen required for combusting coke spent catalyst. An oxygen-containing secondary gas is supplied radically to the bottom of the upper regeneration zone and contains about 60 to 85 percent of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen required for combusting coke on spent catalyst, the total amount of oxygen provided being from 100 to 110 percent of the stoichiometric amount required. A fluidized dense phase bed of catalyst undergoing regeneration is maintained, from the upper portion of which hot regenerated catalyst is removed. Additionally a method is provided for transferring heat from a dilute phase back to the fluidized dense phase catalyst bed.
