18 ABSTRACT In a fluidizing mixer, separation of treatment gas (such as chlorine gas) from a slurry (such as medium consistency paper pulp) is minimized by providing a dam or barrier along the shaft (and optionally the housing) of the mixer. The dam is disposed between the treatment gas inlet and slurry outlet of the mixer, and fills up the area between the mixer blades at that point along the shaft. Gas which collects at the shaft is moved radially outwardly by the dam and is caused to be intimately mixed with the slurry by the fluidizing mixer.
