Abstract of the Disclosure An on-line system for measuring the concentrations of additives applied as a coating to at least one surface of a moving web of material which may already contain the additives in which prior to the application of the coating the web is irradiated with x-ray radiation of a sufficiently high energy to cause the additives contained therein to emit fluorescent radiation. In response to the emitted radiation a first radiation detector generates a first set of signals corresponding to the concentrations of the additives initially contained in the web. Subsequent to the application of the coating both surfaces of the web are irradiated with x-ray radiation of sufficiently high energy to cause the additives contained therein to emit fluorescent radiation. In response to the emitted radiation, second and third radiation detectors generate a second and third set of signals corresponding respectively to the concentrations of the additives applied to each surface of the web. The sets of signals are fed to a microcomputer which provides an indication of the concentra- tions of the additives initially contained in the web and subsequently applied to the web.
