D-22,256 FLUORESCENT LAMP HAVING DOUBLE PHOSPHOR LAYER ABSTRACT A fluorescent lamp has two phosphor layers. The phosphor of the first layer comprising a halophosphate and being disposed on the inner surface of the lamp envelope, and the phosphor of the second layer being superimposed on the first phosphor layer and comprising a phosphor blend, at least one of the phosphors of the blend being activated by europium or terbium. The second phosphor layer provides a significant increase in lamp efficiency but is substantially more expensive than the first layer. Use of the more efficient second layer in combination with the less expensive first layer results in a lamp wherein efficiency of conversion to visible light is achieved in a more cost effective manner than with prior lamps.
