ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE. To appropriately control the current flow through filaments (16) of a compact fluorescent lamp (15), operated for example at about 45 kHz from an auxiliary circuit, in which the frequency of the output energy is dependent on loading during the preheating, starting and operating phases of the lamp, a reactive impedance (18; 19; 20; 21) is connected across each of the filaments (16) of the lamp (15), the impedance value being so selected that, during the preheating phase, the impedance value of the cross- connected impedance is high, to furnish sufficient preheating current, whereas, under operating condition, the cross-connected impedance value is low to form a bypass, and prevent undue current flow through the filaments of the electrodes (16) of the lamp (15). This is an improvement over the circuit shown in detail in U.S. Patent 4,775,822, Statnic et al, assigned to the assignee of this invention.
