Fluorescent materials, which when irradiated with VW radiation, in particular at wavelengths in the range between about 145 nm and 185 nm, luminesce efficiently in the visible region of the spectrum. To this end, particular host lattices are selected which have an optical band gap of at least 6.7 eV, in particular borates, phosphates, aluminates and silicates. These are doped with the activators Eu3+ (red fluorescence), Tb3+ (green fluorescence) or Eu2+ (blue fluorescence). A preferred illuminant coating for a three-band fluorescent lamp comprises the red illuminant R: (Y0.72Gd0.2Eu0.08)BO3, the green illuminant G: (La0.43Ce0.39Tb0.18)PO4, and the blue illuminant B: (Ba0.94Eu0.06MgAl10O17, the components being mixed in the ratio R:G:B = 0.36:0.555:0.085.
