A method of reducing the static and dynamic coefficients of friction and improving the wear life of elastomeric articles. The articles are exposed to gaseous fluorine in a reactor vessel under reaction conditions sufficient reduce the friction coefficient and improve the wear life, without promoting degradation of the tensile properties of the article. A fluorinated material is created on the external portions of the article, which extends inwardly into the matrix of the article. The method additionally improves the barrier properties of thermoplastic elastomers.
