ABSTRACT In the present invention, continuous data acquisition of substrate hydrolysis by a protease enzyme is achieved through the use of a fluorescent peptide substrate, wherein the quantum yield of fluorescence increases upon proteolytic cleavage of the substrate. Incubation of a viral protease enzyme with the fluorogenic substrate results in a time- dependent increase in fluorescence intensity which is linearly related to the extent of substrate hydrolysis.
