GECAN 3060 FLUSH ROLLED JOINT Abstract of the Disclosure There is disclosed an elongated pressure tube suitable for use in a nuclear fuel channel. In this environment, pressurized water passes through the pressure tube extracting heat from fuel bundles carried in the pressure tube. The pressure tube has an upstream end portion that is adapted to have its outer surface roll joined to an inside surface of an end fitting of dissimilar material. The inside surface of the end fitting has a plurality of recessed grooves contained therein to facilitate the rolled joint. The upstream end portion of the pressure tube initially has a greater wall thickness and a smaller inside wall surface diameter than the remainder of the pressure tube. To form the rolled joint, a roller is placed inside the upstream end portion to apply outwardly directed force to the inside wall surface of the end portion causing the inside wall surface diameter of the end portion to become flush with the remaining inside wall surface of the pressure tube. During the formation of the rolled joint, material from the end portion flows into the recessed grooves of the end fitting. By providing a "flush" rolled joint in the final assembly of the fuel channel there will be no discontinuity in the inside wall surface of the pressure tube. The discontinuity in the inner wall surface diameter at the roll joint of the prior art pressure tube has permitted the fuel bundle to vibrate and to fret the pressure tube adjacent the rolled joint.
