A flushing cistern for use in conjuction with a sanitary appliance or appliances comprises a flush-initiating piston or plunger which is actuated by an electromechanical device in response to operation of a switch or switches. Facilities are included for controlling the quantity of water discharged and for preventing initiation of the flushing cycle in certain circumstances.
