Foam is destroyed by exposing it to a pulsed laser beam having a wavelength selected to correspond to a mode specific peak of the absorption spectrum of the liquid constituent of the foam and a pulse length selected to match the thermal and mechanical properties of the foam such that energy is transferred to the foam sufficiently rapidly to disrupt the molecular structure of the foam. In water-based foams, an Erbium- based laser such as an Er:YAG laser having a wavelength of 2940 nm is particularly effective.

Selon cette invention, on détruit la mousse en l'exposant à un faisceau laser pulsé qui possède, d'une part, une longueur d'onde choisie pour correspondre à un pic spécifique au mode du spectre d'absorption du composant liquide de la mousse et, d'autre part, une durée d'impulsion choisie pour correspondre aux propriétés mécaniques et thermiques de la mousse de manière à ce que l'énergie soit transférée à la mousse à une vitesse suffisante pour détruire la structure moléculaire de ladite mousse. Un laser à base d'erbium tel qu'un laser erbium YAG ayant une longueur d'onde de 2940 nm s'est révélé particulièrement efficace contre les mousses aqueuses.
