A method using a piece of foam and an elongate stick to produce a swab is disclosed and comprises the steps of: punching the piece of foam to define therein a blank having a depression; and inserting an end of said stick into the depression and securing said end in said depression. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed. The swab includes a foam member and a stick. The foam member has: spaced-apart ends; a longitudinal axis extending between the ends; an outer surface that is uniform along the length of the foam member in the manner of an extrusion; and a depression defined therein extending longitudinally from one end towards the other end. The foam density is highest in the volume disposed between the depression and the other end. One end of the stick is disposed in and adhesively secured in said depression and extends longitudinally therefrom.
