ABSTRACT Foil bearing apparatus having a plurality of individual compliant foils and mounting assemblies therefor wherein each mounting assembly is coupled to an associated foil at a position intermediate the ends of the foil. Individual compliant foils configured for mounting in this fashion and methods of mounting such foils are also defined. In addition, the apparatus may include associated foil stiffeners especially configured to achieve improved damping of bearing oscillations. In one embodiment, the compliant foil may be similarly configured to provide the desired damping.
