A portable mat for driving golf balls has an elongate platform with opposed front and back edges, opposed right and left edges, opposed top and bottom surfaces, and a longitudinal axis extending between the front and rear edges. A rear portion of the platform adjacent the back edge has a stance area on the top surface on which a golfer stands when striking a golf ball. An elongate slot extending along the bottom surface of the rear portion generally transversely to the longitudinal axis forms a hinge axis to allow the mat to be folded thereabout to sandwich the top surface. A reinforcement mesh is embedded within the rear portion between the top surface and slot to reinforce the hinge axis and to avoid failure of rear portion in the vicinity of the hinge axis. In one version a front portion of the platform adjacent the front edge forms a tray for holding golf balls. An intermediate portion of the platform located between the rear and front portions forms a cavity for removably receiving a plurality of interlocking simulated grass- like panels onto which a golf ball may be placed and driven. A plurality of longitudinally and transversely extending grooves on the stance area enhance a golfer's traction thereon, and the grooves form a grid pattern for assisting a golfer in aligning a swing when striking a golf ball from the turf panels.
