ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention concerns a foldable head rest which provides elevated support for a person's head while lying in the prone position at the beach or other leisure place, for example. The head rest may be easily carried in a folded flat configuration in one's luggage or hand and quickly unfolded for use at the beach. The head rest broadly comprises a pair of rectangular frames including an interior and exterior frame each having two sets of two offset but parallel leg portions. Cross members join the opposite leg portions of each frame at their otherwise free ends. Fabric panels are secured to the respective cross members of the opposite frames including a top panel which provides direct support for the head and a bottom panel which supportively contacts the sand or ground to prevent the head rest from sinking into the sand or ground. Each set of leg portions of each frame are tangent above and below respectively, to a central hub. Each central hub and extensions therefrom further comprise a multitransitional portion which serves as a means for pivotal connection of the frames as well as a interface for the rotating frames during opening and closing of the head rest. A hinge shaft, depending inwardly from the central hub of the exterior frame, is inserted through a centered hole of the central hub of the interior frame to pivotally connect the frames. To prevent the internal and external frames from laterally separating when in the open position, protruding lobes depend from the ends of the hinge shafts and key shaped arrangement. The hinge shafts are rotated within the keyhole shaped centered holes upon unfolding the head rest thereby positioning the lobes in a locking fashion within the centered holes. Stops are integrally formed by the abutment of the offset leg portions with the multitransitional portion of the frame whereby further rotation of the frames and unfolding of the head rest is restricted upon engagement of the stops of the exterior frame with the stops of the interior frame. The fabric panels are folded upon themselves and stored within the rectangular frame when the head rest is folded. Unfolding the head rest, the fabric panels become taut and extend between the frames. The head rest may be used such that either panel serves as the top panel.
