There is provided a walker apparatus having a pair of frame members including telescoping tubes. The apparatus includes a handle bar assembly having a gripping handle, a connection member connected thereto and an actuation means for actuating the connection member. The apparatus has a brake pad means and a self-adjusting brake rod assembly disposed within one frame member. The brake rod assembly has a brake rod connected to the brake pad means and a gripping member connected to the connection member. The gripping member remains adjacent to the brake rod throughout the adjustment range of the telescoping tubes. The gripping member is spring-biased to remain free of the brake rod in a non-actuated mode and, when the gripping handle of the walker is squeezed to actuate the connection member, the gripping member is actuated to engage and actuate the brake rod.
