A mandrel for releasably holding a boot or shoe has a front member and rear member connected to a base. The front member includes an upper toe member and the rear member includes a heel member. The toe member is attached to the front member by a pair of curved rods which slide between an upper end of the front member and a pin so that as the bottoms of the rods are moved up and down by an air cylinder, the toe member is projected to curve upwardly and forwardly. Another air cylinder is used for raising the heel and a further air cylinder is used to act between the heel and an upper part of the front member for spreading and retracting the front and the rear members with respect to each other. When the cylinders are all retracted, footwear is easily placed over the mandrel and then by extending each respective piston, a firm grip on the footwear is achieved so that cleaning polishing or spray dyeing of the footwear can be carried out.
