The invention relates to a forage harvester comprising an abrading base (10), a housing (6), a knife drum (7) which is rotatably mounted in the housing (6) and a knife (8) which interacts with the abrading base (10) to finely chop the harvested material. The abrading base (10) has a large number of projections (11) which are axially interspaced around the periphery. The knife (8) has a cutting edge (12). The projections have at least two lateral surfaces (13, 14) whose edges together form an angle and are not parallel to the cutting edge (12) of the knife (8). A first and a second set of knives (8) are provided. Said sets are located on one respective half of the knife drum (7), are offset in relation to one another in the rotational direction of the knife drum (7) and their cutting edges are inclined in relation to the rotational axis of the knife drum (7).
