FORCED COMMUTATION CHOPPER HAVING CURRENT LIMIT ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A forced commutation chopper control for regulating speed of a DC series tractive motor limits peak motor current by sensing the voltage across the commutation capacitor during the on-time of the current pulses and gating the commutation SCR on, to thereby commutate the main SCR off and terminate the current pulse to the motor, after a variable time delay subse- quent to initiation of charging of the commutation capacitor, the duration of which delay is a function of the rate of rise of the voltage on the commutation capacitor, and after the voltage on the commutation capacitor has reached a steady-state value.
