ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ignition system for hydrocarbon fuels based on a new approach to ignition in which the principle of "flame discharge ignition" is introduced to couple ignition energy to the initial flame front plasma (32) to convert the flame front (31) into an ignition dis- charge in which electrical energy is efficiently coupled to the propagating flame front, either as a "pulsing flame discharge ignition" system in which the flame front becomes part of the spark discharge circuit, or an "enhanced conventional discharge ignition" in which very high electric fields are "naturally" main- tained at the flame front. Electrical, geometrical, spark, and hydrocarbon flame front plasma discharge properties are taken into account and adjusted or tailored, where practical, within the context of the new approach, to create a flame discharge process capable of igniting very lean mixtures. The system is further improved by modifying the fuel's flame front plasma properties by increasing the ratio of the Carbon to Hydrogen (C/H) content of the fuel so that the C/H ratio falls in the range of 0.5 to 2,0, and/or by using additives to further increase the flame front plasma density (35) without reducing the plasma recombination coefficient, and preferably raising it by at least eliminating lead additives. Such improved hydrocarbon fuel is usable in all types of IC engines and burners including systems using electro- magnetic combustion support means for maintaining a high electric field of the order of 1000 volts/cm/atmosphere at the fuel-air flame front for enhancing combustion reactions, especially under lean air-fuel ratio for the lowest exhaust emissions (low NOx) and highest combustion and engine efficiency.
