The present invention features a method for the formation of superporous hydrogels using an ion-equilibration tech-nique. Anionic polysaccharides are included in the hydrogel reaction mixture and cations are introduced either during or after hydrogel formation. Properties of the resulting hydrogel can be subsequently adjusted by treating the cation complexed gel with a different cation or cation mixture under equilibrating conditions. It has been found that by properly adjusting the cations and the sequence in which they are used in the equilibration process, superporous hydrogels can be formed that are highly absorbent while maintaining favorable structural properties, including strength, ruggedness, and resiliency. It has also been found that applying ap-propriate dehydration conditions to them after their formation can further stabilize the superporous hydrogels formed by the method of the invention.
La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant la formation d'hydrogels superporeux par une technique d'équilibrage ionique. Dans le mélange de réaction de l'hydrogel, on introduit des polysaccharides, puis des cations, pendant ou après formation de l'hydrogel. Pour corriger ultérieurement les propriétés de l'hydrogel obtenu, on traite le gel cationiquement complexé avec un cation différent ou un mélange de cations différents, dans des conditions créant l'équilibre. Il s'est avéré que, en corrigeant à bon escient les cations et l'ordre dans lequel on les fait intervenir dans le traitement d'équilibrage, on arrive à former des hydrogels superporeux hautement absorbants, tout en conservant leurs intéressantes propriétés structurelles (force, rugosité, résilience, ...). Il s'est avéré également qu'en leur appliquant des conditions de déshydratation convenables après leur formation, on peut stabiliser encore plus les hydrogels superporeux obtenus par le procédé de l'invention.
