A formulation for oral administration, in particular to ruminants. Effective substances such as nutrients and medications should be released after a delay or slowly after they have been administered orally. In particular in the case of ruminants, very little or none should be released in the rumen. Suitable coatings are costly and, in particular, are unsuitable for administration in large quantities. Known coatings of this kind also entail the disadvantage of physiological incompatibility and/or are not permitted under current legislation. The new coating contains thinner zones and/or nominal break points that accelerate release compared to essentially even coatings. It is preferred that sharp- edged particles, such as pellets, be coated, when the coating is so configured that it can break away along the edges after oral administration. Preferred are coatings made up of two layers, the inner layer containing a filler and a film- forming medium, and the outer layer containing only film- forming medium.
