ABSTRACT A forward scatter smoke detector includes a light source and a photocell separated by a masking body such that light cannot impinge directly on the photocell from the source. These components are enclosed in a housing which has louvres allowing smoke to enter the housing and cause scattering of light to the photocell which signals an alarm condition. Instead of a flat light absorbing body the masking body is formed with a reflective surface, preferabiy conical or of a similar shape. The reflected light represents a substantial energy saving.
