ABSTRACT A method for human interfaces whereby an operator activities a limited number of pushbuttons or switches and views a display for selection of the input lo a device of interest for comprehensive control of the device of interest. The method is described using either a configuration of two pushbuttons and a display and a configuration of three pushbuttons or switches and a display on the human interface device. The method used with either configuration incorporates a set of rules that permit the operator to move in two dimensions through a map or matrix of functions or settings. each represented by a screen display, which are used to operate the controlled equipment. In a specified series of steps. the operator presses one. the other or both pushbuttons for a specified length of time for the two-pushbutton configuration. and presses one of three pushbuttons for a specified length of time for the three-pushbutton configuration.
