- 0 - FRACTURABLE FIBER CROSS-SECTIONS Abstract of the Invention A continuous filament having a special geo- metrical cross-section to give controlled fractur- ability so as to produce free protruding ends, multi- filaments of which produce yarns coming within the scope of U.S. Patent No. 4,245,001; the cross-section of the textile filament having a main body section and one or more wing members connected to the body sec- tion, the body section comprising about 25 to about 95% of the total mass of the filament and the wing member or wing members comprising about 5 to about 7 of the total mass of filament, with the filament being further characterized by a wing-body interaction (WBI) defined by Image where the ratio of the width of said filament cross- section to the wing member thickness (LT/Dmin) is ?30, and wherein Dmax is the thickness or diameter of the body section of the cross-section, Dmin is the thickness of the wing member for essentially uniform wings and the minimum thickness close to the body section when the thickness of the wing member is variable, Rc is the radius of curvature of the inter- section of the wing member and body section, and Lw is the overall length of the filament cross-section.
