Abstract The invention relates to frame synchronisation of time division multiplex systems which provides satisfactory insensitivity to simulation of synchronising features, without requiring an excessive channel trans- mission capacity. According to the invention there is provided a synchron- isation apparatus for a receiving station for the reception of time divi- multiplex (t.d.m.) signals in the form of a series of t.d.m. frames each of m bits one of which is a synchronising bit and wherein a plurality p, where p is at least 6, of consecutive synchronising bits form a synchronising word. A synchronising word recognition device is arranged in operation to monitor the synchronising words and to recognise when such words conform to a predetermined bit pattern. A monitor produces a synchronisation alarm for indicating lack of synchronism and is responsive to the recognition of two consecutive synchronising words to commence a test period the duration of which is at least one multiple of p t.d.m. frames and, if not reset, terminates, the synchronisation alarm at the end of the test period. A reset device is responsive to failure to recognise a synchronising word during the test period to reset the monitoring means. A synchronisation loss recognition device is responsive to failure to recognise a prcdetermin- ed plurality of consecutive synchronising words to reinstate the synchron- isation alarm signal.
