ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is provided a print head of the dot matrix type includ- ing a plurality of elongated print wires, a nose cone assembly in which said print wires are slidably mounted, a hearing at the front end of said nose cone assembly through which the printing ends of said print wires protrude, openings in the rear end of said nose cone assembly through which the driving ends of said print wires protrude, a plurality of solenoid assemblies disposed about the rear end of said nose cone assembly including one solenoid assembly operatively associated with each print wire, one end of the armature of each solenoid assembly being operatively associated with the driving end of its asso- ciated print wire for selectively causing it to perform a print- ing operation, an armature support and biasing assembly in which said armatures are pivotally mounted, an adjustable mount- ing means mounting said armature support and biasing assembly to the rear end of said nose cone assembly for adjustably position- ing the said one end of each armature member relative to its associated solenoid pole piece arm to provide a desired gap therebetween, said armature support and biasing assembly compris- ing a flexible, parasol-shaped member and a biasing spring member mounted in said flexible, parasol-shaped member, said flexible, parasol-shaped member comprising a central hub portion and an outer annular portion, said spring member having a plu- rality of radially-spaced biasing fingers, an end portion of each said finger applying a biasing force to the other end of its associated armature urging the said one end of its associated armature away from its associated solenoid pole piece arm, said adjustable mounting means connecting said central hub portion of said flexible, parasol-shaped member to the rear end of said nose cone assembly at a desired position relative thereto to provide the said desired gap between the other end of each armature and its associated pole piece arm, and spacer means which cooperate with said flexible, parasol-shaped member and said spring member to provide a desired biasing force to each said other end of its associated armature which desired biasing force is substantially independent of the size of said gap and the position of said central hub portion relative to said nose cone assembly. The present invention also provides additional desirable, optional features, such as providing for automatic adjustment of the jewel bearing member, effecting a reduction of the magneto- motive remnance applied to the armatures, providing an improved method of joining solenoid pole piece arms to a solenoid support member, and providing a nose cone assembly having accurately located surfaces to facilitate mounting and alignment of same on a carriage assembly. -2-
