An austenitic, stainless steel alloy having a unique combination of machinability and a low magnetic permeability, especially in the cold worked condition, is disclosed consisting essentially of, in weight percent, about C: 0.035 max; Mn: 1.0-2.0; Si: 1.0 max; P: 0.2 max; S: 0.15 - 0.45; Cr: 16.0 - 20.0; Ni: 9.2 - 12.0; Mo: 1.5 max; Cu: 0.8 - 2.0; N: 0.035 max; Se: 0.1 max; with the balance essentially iron. A preferred composition contains 0.01 % max. C, 9.5 to 12.0 % Ni, and 0.5 to 2.0 % Cu.

Alliage d'acier inoxydable austénitique se caractérisant par une combinaison unique d'usinabilité et de faible perméabilité magnétique, tout particulièrement dans des conditions de façonnage à froid; cet alliage étant principalement constitué, en pourcentage en poids, d'environ: 0,035 % au maximum de C; 1,0 à 2,0 % de Mn; 1,0 % au maximum de Si; 0,2 % au maximum de P; 0,15 à 0,45 % de S; 16,0 à 20,0 % de Cr; 9,2 à 12,0 % de Ni; 1,5 % au maximum de Mo; 0,8 à 2,0 % de Cu; 0,035 % au maximum de N; 0,1 % au maximum de Se et principalement de fer pour le reste. Une composition préférée contient au maximum 0,01 % de C, entre 9,5 et 12,0 % de Ni et entre 0,5 et 2,0 % de Cu.
