A ferritic stainless steel alloy is disclosed having a unique combination of machinability, cold-formability, weldability, and corrosion resistance. The disclosed alloy has the following weight percent composition: Carbon 0.08 max. wt.%, Manganese 1.00 max. wt.%, Silicon 1.00 max. wt.%, Phosphorus 0.045 max. wt.%, Sulfur 0.030-0.30 wt.%, Chromium 10.5-11.75 wt.%, Molybdenum 0.50 max. wt.%, Copper 0.50 max. wt.%, Nickel 0.50 max. wt.%, Aluminum 0.10 max. wt.%, Columbium 10 x C to 0.80 wt.%. The balance is essentially iron. The novel alloy is particularly suited for components used in automotive fuel and exhaust systems. A number of such components made from the aforesaid alloy are also disclosed.

Cette invention concerne un alliage d'acier inoxydable ferritique qui présente une combinaison unique d'usinabilité, de pliage à froid, de soudabilité et de résistance à la corrosion. L'alliage en question possède la composition suivante: 0,08 % maximum en poids de carbone, 1,00 % maximum en poids de manganèse, 1,00 % maximum en poids de silicium, 0,045 % maximum en poids de phosphore, entre 0,030 et 0,30 % en poids de soufre, entre 10,5 et 11,75 % en poids de chrome, 0,50 % maximum en poids de molybdène, 0,50 % maximum en poids de cuivre, 0,50 % maximum en poids de nickel, 0,10 % maximum en poids d'aluminium et de 10 fois la quantité de carbone jusqu'à 0,80 % en poids de niobium, le reste étant constitué de fer. Ce nouvel alliage convient particulièrement aux composants utilisés dans les dispositifs automobiles d'alimentation en carburant et d'échappement. L'invention se rapporte également à un certain nombre de ces composants fabriqués à partir dudit alliage.
