The invention relates to a safety device for a crosshead of a decoking plant arranged by means of a carrying device to be liftable and lowerable on profiles (2, 3) of a frame (1) above a drum adapted to receive material, such as coke, and guided on guide rails (4, 5) of the profiles (2, 3) by means of rolls (44), and carried by a cable of a winch slung around return pulleys at the top of the frame (1) and around a carrying pulley (42) rotatably supported at the top end of the crosshead (37); and equipped with brakes (45) for stopping the crosshead (37) in an emergency, when the carrying device fails, and for intercepting the crosshead (37) and fixing it on the guide rails (4, 5) or on the profiles (2, 3). For a safety device, a test apparatus is provided for testing the brakes (45) on site, comprising a carrying device, such as a brace (6), attachable on the frame (1), on which the crosshead (37) is mountable for simulating a free fall of the same by means of a release device (11), and an arrestor device (30) for the crosshead (37) releasably attachable on the frame (1) at a distance below the brace (6).
